Work continues after the local elections
Whatever happens in local politics, the climate crisis continues to be a very real challenge for every community. The vast majority of people in the UK and around the world accept the overwhelming evidence for climate change caused by human activity, and support action to reduce its risks and costs.
The independent Kirklees Climate Commission remains committed to working with partners to deliver fair, innovative, and effective local action on climate change. By working together to tackle the causes and consequences of climate change, we can help lower energy bills for homes and businesses, reduce the impacts of flooding and drought on people’s lives, protect nature, and improve health and wellbeing for all.
We will continue to work in co-operation with all our partners including Kirklees Council, the other members of the Kirklees Community Safety Partnership, the University of Huddersfield, businesses and communities across the district, and similar organisations across Yorkshire and the UK.
The Commission’s work supports the creation of sustainable jobs and a thriving economy, affordable and secure energy for all, improved public transport, and resilient communities across Kirklees. We believe that every region needs to play its part to meet our national commitments, and help keep Britain at the forefront of the global energy transition.
Our current work includes supporting the Energy Neighbours project which is helping empower local people to take climate action and reduce fuel poverty in their communities. Commissioners are also supporting the new Kirklees Local Plan, mapping energy production and greenhouse gas emissions across the Kirklees district, and working with local schools to help them meet their sustainability commitments.
We have also recruited seven new Commissioners this year, who bring experience and expertise from a range of local businesses and organisations.
We look forward to continuing to work and co-operate with Kirklees Council and all our partners.
