Members

Members of the Kirklees Climate Commissioners come from a wide variety of sectors and backgrounds.

Each Commissioner brings their own expertise and insight to our work. Commissioners are unpaid, and volunteer a small portion of their time to supporting the Commission – typically around one day a month.

We usually have a membership of between 20 and 30 Commissioners, with recruitment taking place as required. Seven new Commissioners joined in early 2025.

Chair

Peter is Professor Emeritus of Sustainable Spatial Development at the School of Earth & Environment, University of Leeds, and Chair of the Northern Ireland Housing Executive. He lives in Kirklees and is a trustee of the Kirkwood Hospice. His research and professional interests include strategic planning, regeneration, housing and community development.

Vice-chair

Aafaq is the councillor for the ward of Heckmondwike in Kirklees council. He holds cabinet responsibility for Culture and Greener Kirklees.

Shahana Adeeb

Shanana Adeeb

Commissioner

Shahana is a supply chain professional with an international career spanning social service, voluntary initiatives, mentoring, teaching, corporate environments, and academic research. She is also an Associate at the Yorkshire & Humber Climate Commission, and a Governor at Moldgreen Community Primary School. She lives in Huddersfield.

Professor John Allport

Commissioner

John is Professor of Engineering at the University of Huddersfield, where he leads development of the Energy Integration Laboratory. His work focuses on energy efficiency and emissions reduction. John joined the University in 2013 after 30 years in industry. He is a Chartered Engineer, Chartered Manager, and Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Kiran Bali

Commissioner

Kiran is a global organisational leader in environmental justice, women’s empowerment, interfaith understanding, and peacebuilding through multidisciplinary approaches. She is the Global Chair of the United Religions Initiative which promotes cooperative action, and launched the Global Hindu declaration to tackle climate change through advocacy and grassroots community empowerment.

Tim runs Othersfield Sustainable Communications, a public relations consultancy focusing on low-carbon technologies and the energy sector. He has worked in business journalism and communications since the 1990s, including 15 years at the University of Sheffield’s manufacturing research centres. He lives in Huddersfield, and also volunteers with local environmental group EPIKS.

Richard Clifton

Richard is an independent carbon verifier with 16 years’ experience within the EU Emissions Trading Scheme, working across various energy-intensive industries. He previously worked in the heavy clay industry at Hepworth Building Products, working across energy efficiency production and process management. He also volunteers with a community environment group.

Jimmy Dickinson

Jim is head of the Longley Farm family of businesses, which operate in the UK, Estonia, Australia and Uruguay. He is also Constable of the Graveship of Holme and a Fellow of the Royal Agricultural Society. He studied engineering, and has a particular interest in a sustainable future for the Holme Valley.

Chris is a pioneer of Passivhaus construction in the UK. He co-founded the sustainable building company now known as 21 Degrees, and was joint managing director for 25 years. He has also chaired the UK Passivhaus Trust, Association for Environment Conscious Building, and International Passivhaus Association Affiliates Council.

Karen is an environmental engineer with over 15 years’ experience in the water industry. She has been involved with Fairtrade for many years, including sitting on the Kirklees Fairtrade Steering Committee. Karen also co-leads an initiative helping Christians, churches and their leaders to be good stewards of the earth.

Jennifer is an environmental manager at Cummins Turbo Technologies, with over 10 years’ experience in environmental strategy and compliance within the manufacturing industry. She aims to build a closer working relationship on sustainable matters between Cummins and the community in which it operates.

Bill Macbeth

Bill was managing director of the Textile Centre of Excellence in Huddersfield for 25 years. He has held senior skills policy positions at the national and local level, including director of the UK Fashion and Textiles Association, president of the European Regional Information Society Association, and trustee of the Cobbett Environmental Trust.

Stephen is a manager at CityFibre, leading on several of the business’s West Yorkshire investments to roll out future-proofed fibre connectivity to transform the way residents live and work. Stephen is a civil engineer by profession and a Smart City advocate.

Christopher is chief editor at Kirklees Local Television, a grassroots social enterprise and media production company which showcases the best of what the region has to offer, from business to entertainment. Chris has over 10 years’ experience in multimedia production, and lives in Huddersfield.

Beatrice Neumann

Beatrice is head of skills and industry engagement at Screen Yorkshire, and leads courses on sustainability management for the International Screen Institute. She has 23 years’ experience in the film industry, and lives in Meltham.

Tony Newham

Commissioner

Tony set up his own commercial finance brokerage in Huddersfield in 2007, following 28 years in commercial and corporate banking with HSBC. Tony has a lifelong personal interest in meteorology and climate, and uses his business contacts and knowledge to foster, encourage and promote more sustainable practices.

Abdul Ravat

Abdul oversees development and asset management at the Abbeyfield Living Society, and has 35 years’ experience in affordable housing, local government, and the third sector. He chairs the National Housing Federation’s Older Person Housing Group, and works to strengthen governance and sustainability across multiple housing associations through non-executive directorships.

Gideon Richards runs a sustainability and renewable energy consultancy within Kirklees, and has worked in these sectors for two decades. Gideon believes that by working together, the Kirklees district can contribute to not only reduce the impacts of climate change locally, but also create a prosperous and vibrant society.

Stuart Sugarman

Stuart is managing director of CHS, a company owned by Calderdale & Huddersfield NHS Trust to provide procurement, estate, facilities and medical engineering services. He is also the Trust’s lead on climate and sustainability. As a lawyer in the private sector, he has acted for a range of clients on environmental land use, climate and planning issues.

Tom has over 30 years’ experience of working in the third sector, including as CEO of Kirklees charity Northorpe Hall Child & Family Trust. A qualified youth and community worker, Tom helped create Highfields Community Orchard, and has been active in other local environmental campaigns and community organisations.

Dave is countryside officer for Denby Dale Parish Council, focusing on increasing biodiversity in the parish and beyond by working with community voluntary groups and schools. As a specialist in raising awareness of sustainable development, he recognises the importance of integrating environmental projects with people and prosperity.

Snow is a reader at Huddersfield Business School and director of the SURGE (Sustainability, Responsibility, Governance, and Ethics) research centre. A passionate advocate for climate resilience, she integrates behavioural science, social psychology, and digitalisation to drive sustainability solutions. She lives in Huddersfield.
